Proven Since 1905

Reckitt has manufactured Brasso in Britain since 1905, with a formula that has stayed close to the original recipe for over a century.

The Brasso Story

Brasso traces back to 1905, when Reckitt & Sons chemists in Hull developed Britain’s first liquid metal polish after a company traveler spotted a similar product being used in Australia. By 1920 the liquid formula was sold to railways, hospitals and hotels across the country.

The name became shorthand for brass polishing in British homes, replacing older paste cleaners that took longer to apply and buff. Reckitt & Sons later merged with J. & J. Colman in 1938, and the brand has stayed under that lineage, now part of Reckitt.

Beyond brass and copper, Brasso is kept on hand for chrome fixtures, stainless steel trim and even scratch removal on plastics, a habit passed down through households that have used the same bottle shape for decades.

Brasso Metal Polish FAQ

Answers on how to use Brasso metal polish, its ingredients, safety data sheet and where to buy it.

How do you use Brasso metal polish?

Apply a small amount of Brasso metal polish to a soft cloth or a piece of wadding and rub it over the brass, copper, chrome or stainless steel surface using light pressure. Once the tarnish lifts and the polish begins to dry, buff the surface with a clean, dry cloth until it shines. On heavily tarnished pieces, a second application usually finishes the job.

What metals is Brasso safe to use on?

Brasso metal polish is formulated for brass, copper, chrome, stainless steel, pewter, bronze and aluminum. It is also used on plastics, Bakelite and even scratched CDs or DVDs, though it is worth testing on a hidden spot first, since some coated or lacquered metals can be affected by the formula.

Where can I find the Brasso safety data sheet?

The Brasso safety data sheet, sometimes searched as the SDS or ingredients list, is published by the manufacturer and covers handling, storage and first-aid information. It is available through the brand’s official product pages and is worth checking before using the polish in an enclosed space.

Does Brasso remove scratches from metal?

Light surface scratches on brass, chrome and similar metals often fade with repeated buffing, since the polish works by removing a thin layer of tarnished or oxidized metal. Deep gouges will not disappear, but the overall shine usually improves enough that scratches are far less noticeable.

What size bottles does Brasso come in?

Brasso metal polish is sold in several sizes, including small travel-friendly bottles, the popular 8 oz bottle, and larger 175ml and 250ml options in some markets, alongside cream tins and Duraglit wadding for smaller, targeted jobs.

Is Brasso still made by the original company?

Yes. Brasso has been manufactured continuously since 1905 by the company now known as Reckitt, which formed through a series of mergers starting with Reckitt & Sons. The core formula has changed only modestly over the decades, mainly to meet updated safety and environmental standards.

Used it on a set of old brass drawer pulls that had gone almost black. Two passes with a cloth and they looked new again.

Kept a tin of Brasso cream under the sink for years. Works on the chrome taps and the copper kettle just as well.

Bought the 8 oz bottle for a brass headboard. Took some elbow grease but the tarnish came off and the shine held up.
